Measures will alleviate social housing shortage in Limerick
Fine Gael for Limerick, Patrick O’Donovan has welcomed the Government’s announcement of a €15 million national investment in social housing. Limerick will see an investment of €471,000 to make thirty one vacant houses available for use.
“There is a housing shortage across the country. Families in Limerick are in need of homes. This significant investment will make a huge difference to people in the area.
“Only last week in the Dáil I raised the issue of the number of people on the housing list on Limerick City & County Council. In County Limerick there are 1,543 people with a further 2,274 on the housing list in the City. These people are not just numbers. They represent people and their families many of whom have been on the lists for a considerable amount of time. This announcement is the right step front to help tackle the social housing shortage. Properties in the ownership of the Council should not be left vacant when there are people waiting to be housed.”
“Empty houses regularly attract anti-social behaviour; they are unsightly and negatively impact local areas. We want to bring new life into these properties and to turn them into homes once again.
“This investment will not only benefit the individual families who are allocated a new property but it will enhance the community. It is good news for builders and good news for small businesses.
“This €15 million national investment is just one of a number of measures being introduced by the Government to deal with public housing issues. €68 million will be invested nationally to build 449 new homes for families and €30 million will be spent in 2014 to upgrade the energy efficiency of the least well insulated local authority homes.”
