Fine Gael TD for Limerick, and member of the Oireachtas Communications Committee, Patrick O’Donovan has welcomed the launch by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald TD of RTÉjr, the new dedicated digital children’s channel on TV, radio, online and mobile.

The new channel which is designed for 0-7 year olds, will be commercial free, will allow children to actively engage by playing games and will have significant education content. Patrick O’Donovan said that this was very important and he believed that it has the potential to play a major role in the early literacy development of children.

Patrick O’Donovan added that the launch of the channel is welcome given the role that the broadcaster has under its public service remit. He said that he looked forward to similar initiatives being launched by RTE in the coming months and years at other parts of its audience as digital broadcasting develops, and he added that he looked forward to engaging with RTE as a member of the Oirecahtas Communications Committee.
