Ireland could learn lessons from Scottish helicopter crash – O’Donovan

Dec 11, 2013

Fine Gael Limerick TD, Patrick O’Donovan has today (Wednesday) said that the Irish Defence forces should learn lessons from the Scottish helicopter tragedy. Deputy O’Donovan was speaking after he questioned the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Alan Shatter TD, on the matter in the Dáil.

“I extended my sympathies in the Dáil earlier to the victims of the Scottish helicopter crash, which claimed the lives of nine people. Investigators in Scotland are still trying to piece together the events that led to the devastating accident in central Glasgow. The reported absence of a flight recorder in the helicopter has made their task considerably more difficult.

“I was pleased to receive confirmation from Minister Shatter that all helicopters owned by the Irish Defence Forces are fitted with flight recorders. In my view, this is very important if we want to ensure that we can learn from any potential accidents or incidents involving aircrafts here.

“I have urged the Minister to carefully consider the findings of the report on the Glasgow crash, which is to be compiled by the Scottish authorities. If there are any clear lessons to be learned, which could save lives in the future, the Irish Defence Force must take them on board. The Minister has agreed to consider the report’s findings and to implement any necessary changes.

“I also believe the civil aviation sector should closely examine the findings of the British investigation, and should take steps to bring the safety standards and procedures on civilian helicopters into line with Defence Forces aircraft here.”
