O’Donovan welcomes 9% increase in food & drink exports for 2013

Jan 9, 2014

Irish food and drink exports increased by over 9% last year in 2013 bringing the value of these exports to €10billion and this represents a 40% (€3billion) increase on 2009 figures. This increase was driven by a particularly strong performance in meat and livestock exports – up by 8% or €245 million, accounting for almost 33% of the total exports. Other strongly performing categories were prepared foods (+15%), and dairy products and ingredients (+15%).

Welcoming the result Deputy O’Donovan said that “these results are continued evidence of the strong performance and growth in Agri-food industry. Even during what has been a difficult year for the sector we a still seeing strong growth in our food and drinks exports with a positive outlook for the coming year. I would like to congratulate all involved in the industry following the very encouraging results.”

“Last year, Ireland’s food and drink exports surpassed the €9 billion mark for the first time, 2013 saw the €10billion mark passed and the prospects for 2014 are broadly positive with a strong demand for dairy and beef, combined with a more robust prepared foods performance and steady growth in beverages. There is no doubt that emerging markets will play a key role in 2014 for the industry as well as developing stronger ties in established markets. There is also further growth potential for the Agri Food Industry in the Middle East and in China. Exports to China were up over 40% last year, and it is now Ireland’s sixth largest export market overall.”
